Background for the poster:

I am a biologist and photographer who was brought to the beauty of sand through a project done for a school in November 2004. After the first few macro-photographs, I knew I would eventually produce a poster. I was also hooked as a sand collector.

The poster has four "typos" in the names of the sand locations. Sorry! If you have not noticed them yet, you might want to search for them or use the poster as an example of the difficulty of editing before you check for the corrections. Having students find the typos is a great exercise.

The title for the poster is a play on the title of the Grateful Dead tune "Playing in the Band". My last visit to Sand Dunes National Monument was after a week of following the Dead through concerts at Red Rocks and Telluride. "Playing In The Sands" became the theme for travel in the high desert of Colorado in the summer of 1987.

If you have information (composition, formation, history) about the various sands on the poster or images of their location, please email. I need the help of others to make this poster an educational resource.

Each sand has its own page for information and discussion.
